Title - Dentistry, Past, Present and Future

Speaker - Dr Dan Yarnold

Talk Outline - Who likes going to the Dentist? I know I’m not a great fan. But where would we all be without them. In fact I would class Dentistry as one of the essential services that most of us at one time or another have to use.

Dr Dan Yanold use to be my dentist before he left to join a new practise in Buckingham, and has kindly agreed to tell the story of dentistry past, present and future, looking at it from the other side of the drill. I must warn you this talk may have the sound of a dentist’s drill at work, not for the faint hearted.

Title - Did the Earth Move for You...?

Speaker - Mr Mike Turner, retired Geologistand & Science Club Member

Talk Outline - The 1960s was a period of major advances in our understanding of the Earth and the processes which shape our planet.
At that time geologists had no fixed understanding of the mechanisms involved in mountain-building: whereby rock strata, which had clearly been formed in deep-sea conditions because they contained marine fossils, had been uplifted to form mountain chains, such as the Himalayas. In the immortal words of Yul Brynner in "The King and I", these mechanisms could be described as “a puzzlement”
The talk outlines how our understanding of the various geological processes affecting our planet was transformed in the mid-1960s by the concept of “plate tectonics”.
